Fundamental Duties

Fundamental

In the context of the Indian Constitution, Fundamental Duties are a set of moral obligations for all citizens to promote a sense of responsibility and patriotism. They were added to the Constitution by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, under Part IVA (Article 51A). These duties serve as a reminder to citizens of their role in contributing to the nation’s progress, social harmony, and maintaining constitutional values.

There are 11 Fundamental Duties listed in Article 51A of the Indian Constitution, and they include:

  • To respect the Constitution and uphold its ideals and institutions.
  • To cherish and follow the noble ideals that inspired India’s national struggle for freedom.
  • To uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
  • To defend the country and render national service when called upon.
  • To promote the spirit of brotherhood among all people of India, transcending religious, linguistic, regional, or sectional diversities.
  • To preserve the rich heritage of the country’s culture.
  • To protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife.
  • To develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry.
  • To safeguard public property and avoid violence.
  • To strive for excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity.
  • To provide opportunities for education for children between the ages of 6 and 14.

While these duties are not legally enforceable (i.e., there are no legal penalties for not performing them), they are intended to guide citizens in the moral and ethical conduct expected in a democratic society.
