The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards ,2006 which merge various acts & orders in it. FSSAI has been established to check science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

    What are FBO’s?
    As per Food safety act 2006, Food business operators (FBO) is been defined as any undertaking, whether private or public, for profit or not, carrying out any of the activities related to any stage of manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution of food, imports and including food services, sale of food, or food ingredients.
    Who is responsible for implementation & Enforcement of FSSA, 2006?
    Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and State Food Authorities are jointly responsible for implementation & enforcement of FSSA, 2006.
    What are the Sections under which penalties are issued?
    Section 49-67 of the Act.
    How Enforcement activities are done with respect to FBOs?
    It is undertaken by Food Safety Commissioners of State/UT along with Designated Officers and Food Safety Officers.
